George
Clooney and the Darfur Crisis in Sudan (continued) ..
Along with
the Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel,
George Clooney told the U.N. that "The critical hour
for Darfur is now". He went on to say "After
September 30 you won't need the UN You will simply need men
with shovels and bleached white linen and headstones."
The urgent need to take action in the region has been heightened
because the African Union peacekeepers will be moving out at
the end of September, leaving 2.5 million refugees to fend for
themselves.
There have already been 200,000 people killed, with more than
two million fleeing from their homes since 2003. The trouble
started when ethnic African tribes revolted against the Arab-led
Khartoum government.
The President of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir has warned the United
Nations that if they enter after the African Union peacekeepers
leave at the end of the month, they would be violating the country's
sovereignty. President Omar al-Bashir also said that his army
would fight any troops that the UN sent to Sudan.
Nobel Peace Prize winning Elie Wiesel said that "Bashir
is a war criminal.. I think he should be warned that if he does
not stop he will be accused of crimes against humanity".
George Clooney and his father
Nick Clooney recently spent time in Darfur, Sudan. The pair
traveled the region and saw the horrors of what is currently
taking place in the African region. Since their return from
Darfur in April, Clooney has been fighting to get the crisis
noticed by those that can take action.
George said "It's not a political issue. It's not about
left and right, conservative or liberal points of view. It's
only about right and wrong."

Darfur website.
